The blaze at the Gleddoch House hotel, near Greenock, Renfrewshire, started in the kitchens on Friday night and quickly spread to the rest of the building. More than 300 people were evacuated. Firemen saved two modern extensions but the main Victorian building was destroyed. A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said the blaze was not being treated as suspicious. The chefs were later discharged having been treated for minor smoke inhalation.
