Milk sticks from Dairystix

Dairystix, part of Milk Direct, is set to shake up the portioned milk market with the world's first milk-in-a-stick, a development it believes is the biggest innovation in the sector since the 1960s.

The stick format - already commonly used for sugar, coffee and sauces - is claimed to take up 40% less space than the more familiar milk jiggers.

The technology to aseptically pack milk in portioned sticks took several years to perfect and has been certified by Leatherhead Food International. The sticks, which are made in a new 65,000sq ft processing plant in the South-west of England, come initially in fresh and UHT varieties, with further additions in the pipeline.

They are packed in cases of 200 sticks, which have a shelf life of 21 days (fresh) or four months (UHT).
