Couple buy Tintern hotel they wanted six years ago

James McMorrough and Samantha Wright Chepstow Monmouthshire have bought a Grade II-listed hotel near Chepstow, Monmouthshire, that they originally wanted to buy in 2001.

They were frustrated when the owners handed over the Royal George hotel to their son, current vendor Bramwell James Pearce, and instead bought the Swan at Hay on Wye.

The Royal George started life in 1598 as the ironmaster’s cottage for the nearby mine. It served as a coaching inn during the 18th century and has since been extended with the addition of two annexes.

A member of the Best Western consortium, the hotel fronts the main A466 road in Tintern, where it is near the River Wye and Tintern Abbey.

It offers customers 17 en-suite bedrooms, the 42-seat Abbey Lounge bar, the 56-seat Angiddy restaurant, and the 110-capacity Abbey Function Room. The first floor accommodates a one-bedroom apartment and two double staff rooms.

Outside, the riverside trade gardens border the Angiddy Brook, which runs into the River Wye.

The Bristol office of Christie + Co sold the freehold off a guide price of £1.395m.
