Licensing law expert Jeremy Allen dies

The respected licensing law expert Jeremy Allen, a founding partner of law firm Poppleston Allen, has died aged 66.

Allen was the only star-rated licensing solicitor in the country. The Chambers & Partners Dictionary 2011 described him as "universally recognised as a doyen of licensing".

He was a member of the Secretary of State's Advisory Committee during the introduction of the 2003 Licensing Act and was chairman of the Institute of Licensing. He also advised trade associations including the BII and the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA).

Managing partner Jonathan Smith said: "The staff and partners are deeply saddened by Jeremy's sudden death. Jeremy was a friend to us all, as well as an inspiration both professionally and personally. He will be greatly missed."

Neil Robertson, chief executive of the BII said: "Jeremy made a massive contribution to the success and development of the licensed retail industry. He will be missed by many and not least by myself who has come to depend on his advice and support."
