Scottish caterers accredited with healthy eating award scheme

Tuesday 28 August 2007 15:26

More than 130 caterers and food outlets in Scotland have been accredited with a healthy eating award scheme since it launched 12 months ago.

The HealthyLiving scheme aims to make it easier for Scots to choose healthy options when they eat out, whether in a work canteen, restaurant or takeaway.

The awards consist of a self assessment process which involves keeping fat, salt and sugar levels to a minimum, along with making fruit and vegetables readily available.

At least 50% of the foods served must be labelled as HealthyLiving options for the premises to qualify.

Almost 600 food providers have registered for the award over the past 12 months, with 132 achieving accreditation.

Barbara Mcdougall, development officer for the HealthyLiving, said it can take up to four to six months for companies to work through the requirements after they sign up.

Almost half of Scots have had issues finding something healthy to eat when eating outside of their homes, according to a survey carried out by the Scottish Consumer Council.
