The Cromwell Crown hotel has been granted the dubious honour of the UK’s Dirtiest Hotel in TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice awards.

One disgruntled reviewer said “hell on earth” was a compliment for the London hotel, while others refer to “rat droppings on the bed”, a bedroom which “stank of vomit and smoke” and “coffee that tasted of salami”.

In addition to unveiling the ultimate “winner”, TripAdvisor also published a list of the UK’s ten dirtiest hotels, based on traveller ratings for cleanliness.

Seven properties in London made their mark on the roll of grime, together with hotels in Oxford, Brighton and Manchester.

Despite being named and shamed in last year’s dirtiest list, three repeat offenders failed to clean up their act.

Nanford Guest House in Oxford, which claimed the top spot last year and second place in 2007, was third this year. London’s Eden Plaza hotel actually moved up from ninth to fifth place in the TripAdvisor list, and the Park Hotel, also in the capital, improved upon sixth place to come tenth this year.

Luke Fredberg, TripAdvisor spokesman, said: “The biggest and best dirtiest list is back, with TripAdvisor discovering that some hotels take the concept of offering dirt cheap rooms all too literally.

“Guests should be entitled to decent standards of hygiene, whatever rate they’re paying – and we urge any properties failing on this count to clean up their act by 2012, so British hotels can prove they’re equally as medal-worthy as our athletes.”

Using foraged ingredients is nothing new but the trend has become more mainstream over the past two years. However, the wider use of foraged food in restaurants also carries a certain amount of danger.
