£1 pub meal offer landlord calls time on business

The licensee at a pub famed for offering meals for £1 looks set to call time on the business.

Tony Rabbitts is quitting the the Four Crosses on the A5 near Cannock in Staffordshire because he has been unable to make the business profitable despite its headline-grabbing offers.

The pub started offering £1 dinners in 2008, and was selling Christmas dinners for £1.99.

But running the pub is regularly costing £800 a week, according to the Daily Mail.

Rabbitts told the paper: "It wasn't about the money. It was about getting people in here.

"Sixty per cent of the locals have passed away. Lifestyles have changed. People don't go down the local like they used to. They don't go out, and we can't compete with supermarket prices."
