Great Western hotel

A community pub and backpackers’ hostel in the Monmouthshire market town of Abergavenny has been sold off an asking price of £270,000.

The new owner of the Great Western hotel is first-time buyer Gary Hesp, who acquired the freehold from Sue Woodward.

The Grade II-listed building – a former Victorian railway hotel – is a detached three-storey property that combines a thriving community pub with an international backpackers’ hostel.

Abervagenny is a traditional gateway to Wales from England and its location on the River Usk, surrounded by mountains and edged by the Brecon Beacons National Park, offers easy access to stunning countryside.

The property has seven dormitories to sleep 34 backpackers, a public bar, a games room, and two-bedroom owners’ accommodation.

The pub has a strong local clientele that supports pool and darts teams, quiz nights and karaoke.

Hesp intends to retain the community aspects, develop the backpacker business and introduce food sales.

The property was marketed by the Bristol office of Christie + Co.
