T&G Union to investigate tronc abuse

Restaurant and bar workers have called for a government inquiry into tronc scheme abuse, following a report in Caterer that the Inland Revenue is investigating more than 300 restaurants in London (15 May).

In a meeting last week, members of the restaurant and bar branch of the T&G Union agreed to collect evidence from its members into so-called "sharp practices" carried out by employers. It will use the evidence to back up calls for a government inquiry later in the year.

The union claims restaurateurs currently benefit by using tips to supplement employees' minimum wage.

T&G spokesman Dave Turnbull welcomed the Inland Revenue's investigations and said the time was right for the government to look at the minimum wage as well as tronc abuse.
