Humitech filters use a natural rock-derived mineral held inside a plastic permeable cartridge which fixes by magnet to the interior walls of a fridge. As air passes through the filter, humidity is absorbed by the mineral and "desorbed" air passes back into the cabinet. The company claims this regulates refrigerator temperature and humidity more effectively, particularly when fridge doors are left open frequently.
Humitech says food storage life and safety can be extended significantly - by several days for delicate and expensive herbs, and vegetables such as cauliflower can remain usable for up to three weeks.
It also claims the filters keep fridges fresher-smelling and, by removing water droplets in the air, reduce temperatures more quickly, saving energy. Filters are changed every four weeks as part of the Humitech service. Average cost of use in a full-size commercial fridge is about £1.50 per filter per day.
The material used in the filters is called sorbite or guerite and is obtained near the California and Mojave deserts in the USA.
