Inquiry launched into fire at Greene King brewery

An investigation has been launched into the cause of a major fire at the Greene King brewery in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.

The blaze, which forced staff at the brewery to be evacuated, broke out in the boiler room at around 8pm last night (29 July).

Firefighters were forced to use breathing apparatus to tackle thick black smoke and described conditions as “hazardous”.

Ken Williamson, group manager for the Suffolk fire service, said the situation had been “very serious”.

“It is a large boiler room with extremely large boilers and it was a severe fire in there in the early stage of us arriving. The conditions were extremely hazardous and it was very hot with lots of thick black smoke,” he told the Eastern Daily Press.

All Greene King staff were safely evacuated from the brewery during the blaze, which fire staff speculate could have been caused by a “malfunction within the boiler mechanism”.
