Harbour Hotels to develop £25m, 70-bedroom hotel in Southampton

Harbour Hotels is to develop its first new-build property - designed to look like a super yacht - within Southampton's Ocean Village.

The south coast-based company, which currently has five hotels in waterside locations in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, will join forces with MDL Developments to oversee the £25m project.

Appearing to float out into the marina at Ocean Village residential and retail development, the 70-bedroom four- to five-star hotel will feature a restaurant, Champagne roof terrace and spa with gymnasium and swimming pool. The developers are also hoping to create a restaurant alongside the hotel where former Michelin-starred chef Alex Aitken will head another Jetty eaterie similar to that at the Christchurch Harbour hotel in Dorset.

Nick Roach, chairman of Harbour Hotels, said: "We are extremely pleased to be working with MDL on Ocean Village. A hotel on this site is a perfect fit for our portfolio and is an excellent compliment to the existing marina. We have a lot to do, but are fully committed to deliver a landmark hotel, spa and dining destination to Southampton."

It is expected that Ocean Village is to become the new waterfront destination in Southampton to to rival Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth.

An exhibition regarding the development will take place at the Mocha Marina Coffee Shop on Ocean Way in Ocean Village between 12 noon and 8pm on Friday 25 November.

The five existing Harbour Hotels, owned by property investors Nicolas James Group, include Christchurch Harbour Hotel and the Kings hotel, both in Christchurch, Dorset; St Ives Harbour hotel in Cornwall; Salcombe Harbour hotel and the Sidmouth Harbour hotel, both in Devon.

MDL owns and operates 19 UK marinas and boatyards situated across the south west, south and east coasts, and along the River Thames.
