Tips for achieving goals

If you’re having trouble sticking to your goals and New Year resolutions that you set at the beginning of the year, don’t despair because there are many people like you. To help you get back on track, here is some advice to spur you on:

Know what you want and what it would be like if you got it

Make sure you write you goals down. Studies from Harvard University have shown that people who do this and frequently remind themselves of their goals increase their chances of success.

Imagine what it would be like to reach one of your goals. For example, if you are aiming to win an award for your restaurant, consider how this would affect your life, such as how you would cope with the publicity and the extra hours you might need to put in. All this will help you when you do achieve your goal.

Keep focussed on your goals, watch out for opportunities and take them when they arise

Some people wait for a phone to ring, while others make the call. Which do you do? Every day we have a choice to work towards our goals. It’s a much easier choice when you keep focussed, so make that phone call now.

Be aware of your gut feeling and don’t be afraid to go with it

Sometimes when we make a decision, a little voice from inside says “yes” or “no”. All too often people ignore the voice, but end up saying, “If only I’d done what I first thought”.

Try acting as if it’s already happened

If you want to be successful, you have a greater chance if you act as if you are successful. If you want to be a good manager, act as if you are one. It sounds simple, but old habits can be changed, and  - who knows - if you act for long enough, you may find you have actually changed for the better.

Be optimistic

Is the cup half full or half empty? Although optimistic people may annoy you, studies show that happier people have less stress, less illness, more opportunities and more success.

Life is made up of choices: the paths you take, the attitude you have, and what you learn if things don’t go your way and what you decide to do next. Choose wisely, and you are more likely to achieve your goals and be successful.
