PLATINUM AWARD AND RESTAURANT AND BAR GROUPS WITH 11 OR MORE SITES

Winner McDonald's

Employees 67,000

Judges were unanimous in their decision to make McDonald's an overall winner of winners. The company was applauded for being "outstanding with people" and for "assuming everyone can go to the top". A recruitment policy of hiring staff based on attitude, rather than experience, has been praised by the Work Foundation and Investors in People for creating opportunities for people from marginalised communities. A dedicated training website offers e-learning, leading to national qualifications, and for added convenience, exams can be taken in specially accredited restaurants around the UK.

Numerous flexible working initiatives are available, including the Family Contract, which allows family members working in the same restaurant to cover shifts without prior notice. Staff perks range from eight-week paid sabbaticals to discounts on holidays, computers and clothing. On average, managers stay with the company for 10 years.

David Fairhurst, vice-president of people at McDonald's, comments: "Our approach is to attract the right people for the business, then do everything we can to make sure they want to stay with us.
