The six SelfCooking Centers from Rational (all available as gas or electric models) aim to save caterers space and time, and reduce their use of energy and raw materials.

The manufacturer says that they save space because a single unit can replace commercial equipment such as deep-fryers, stoves, boiling pans, tilt pans, conventional or convection ovens, steamers, toasters and grills, along with specialist items such as spits, rôtisseries and baking provers.

Programs calculate the best way to cook different foods to preserve nutrients and reduce food shrinkage (which is 20% less on a roasting joint) and can produce fried food without the use of unhealthy fats. The SelfCooking Control monitors and optimises the cooking process at all times.

The units' ability to cook different types of food simultaneously also saves time. Other energy-saving features include a CalcDiagnosis system to prevent the build-up of limescale, a speedy heat-up so the oven need not be kept on all the time, and an Overnight Cooking function to take advantage of cheaper, off-peak power.
