
London hotels boosted profitability by 23.4% in December 2009, according to the latest monthly HotStats survey of 10 European countries.
Hotels in the UK capital increased total gross operating profit per available room (goppar) to €96.95, up from €78.55 in the same month of 2008.
London hotels achieved the highest occupancy in the survey (of 80.7%), the second lowest payroll costs, and the third highest average room rate (of €151.07).
Vienna was the second most profitable city for hotels, despite a 22.7% plunge in goppar to €73.85. A 6.1 percentage point boost to occupancy was undercut by a 13 % fall in average room rate and a 5.1 percentage point rise in payroll costs.
Berlin, Prague and Warsaw were the only other cities to increase gopppar during December 2009.

Definition of terms
Occupancy is that proportion of the bedrooms available during the period which are occupied during the period.
Room rate is the total bedroom revenue for the period divided by the total bedrooms occupied during the period.
Revpar is the total bedroom revenue for the period divided by the total available rooms during the period
Payroll % is the payroll for all hotels in the sample as a percentage of total revenue
IBFCpar is the Income Before Fixed Charges shown per available room
