Enterprise Inns continues to provide financial support of £1.4m a month to licensees, the pub giant said in a trading statement today.

In the statement Enterprise said that without doubt, “the pub industry is facing trading conditions of unprecedented challenges”.

Arguing the quality of its estate and expertise of the majority of its licensees meant its pubs still continued to trade well in the recession.

Enterprise said: “We recognise some licensees, despite their best efforts, are struggling in the current circumstances”.

Enterprise is supporting those publicans with price discounts and rent concessions and was at pains to point out the “inherent fairness of its business model”, given recent public criticism of the beer tie.

The company will announce its half-year results on 12 May 2009.
