Hospitality businesses in Scotland to be checked for short measures

Pubs, hotels and restaurants across Scotland are to be inspected by Trading Standards to ensure customers are not being served short measures.

A survey by Trading Standards in Scotland last year found that nearly a half (45%) of all spirit measures were short.

The visits will take place during the Fair Measure Fortnight campaign, which concludes on 18 August, as the Scotland-wide test purchasing survey looks to ensure customers are not being short changed.

The project is being co-ordinated by SCOTSS, the Society of Chief Officers of Trading Standards in Scotland, who’s chairman Ken Daly, said: “It is against the law for any licensed premises to provide quantities less than stated on the notice, which they must display by the bar area.

“I hope that consumers and licensed traders will welcome this project, it is in everyone’s interest that accurate measures are sold throughout Scotland especially over the summer holiday period when there are so many visitors to Scotland’s pubs and restaurants.”

Those seeking more information about the test purchase survey are being urged to contact their local trading standards officers.
