Manchester schools will be serving up breakfast to students in a bid to get more of them eating the most important meal of the day.

Manchester Fayre, Manchester City Council’s catering arm, has secured £46,000 through Service Improvement Funding to help serve toast, breakfast cereals and orange juice to pupils.

Breakfast Clubs are currently on offer in 49 of the city’s 137 primary and special schools, and are also available to the parents and siblings of students.

The Council hopes that the remaining schools will sign up to the programme, which will be rolled out over the next year.

Councillor Paul Murphy said: “These clubs will prove invaluable to parents who are pushed to meet all their child’s requirements during the morning school run. Being able to drop your child off at school earlier and then go to work knowing they are being cared for and receiving a nutritious meal will be a weight off more parents’ minds.”
