I note from last week's letters column Greville Dare's alarm at smoking in hotel bedrooms (Caterer, 9 March, page 22). He talks of a "deadly oversight" in allowing guests to smoke in rooms when they have "overindulged" through drinking.

Independent family-owned distiller William Grant & Sons has introduced Reyka Vodka, produced at the newly built distillery in Borgarnes, 100km north of Reykjavik in Iceland. Reyka is a premium vodka handcrafted in small batches using spring water very low in minerals, a two-stage lava rock filtration system and a Carter-Head still, more often used in gin production. The firm describes the drink as having a delicate texture that becomes fuller-bodied and lightly creamy with elegant, rounded aniseed and vanilla, a sweet-dry balance and a light spiciness, with a clean, lingering and subtly spiced finish.

Tequila Mex is a new ready-to-drink brand from Spencer's Drinks. It consists of real Mexican Tequila mixed with passion fruit and orange, and is 6.2% abv. The company aims to capitalise on Tequila's growth in the spirits sector and move consumers away from its association with a worm in the bottle or "slammers". Pricing over the bar to consumers is currently from 2.50 to 3.15 per bottle.

Celeste is the Torres family's first Spanish wine to be produced outside Catalua, from tinto fino grown in a seven-hectare vineyard at an altitude of 900m in the Ribera del Duero. Torres describes the wine as having an intense blackberry colour, spicy and intense nose, with liquorice and black pepper hints on a base of well-ripened blackberry and cherry, and on the palate, very fruity at first with ripened tannins, also persistent and full-bodied. Because of its fruity and tannic characteristics, the wine pairs well with meat dishes such as roasts and game, Torres says, and should be served at 16-17°C.

Lerwick-based Blackwood Distillers has launched its 2005 Dry Vintage Gin, for which it grows and hand-harvests many of the botanicals on the storm-ravished Shetland Islands that are its homeland. The unpredictable weather means that, each year, the distilled botanicals produce a unique and distinctive gin. The 2005 vintage is made up of floral and herby undertones, as the damp, cooler summer produced masses of wild water mint, meadowsweet and angelica. Blackwood distilled these wild flowers and herbs with fresh, locally grown coriander to produce a gin which it says has a subtle coriander pungency, tempered with an aroma of herbs and flowers.

A new toffee-flavoured vodka already popular in Wales is being launched across the UK. Toffoc is a 27.5% abv triple-distilled UK grain vodka created by entrepreneurs Dewi Roberts and Padrig Huws, who conceived the idea on the snowy slopes of the Alps after enjoying a similar après-ski drink which was not available back in Britain. They began experimenting with a variety of flavours and came up with a blend which they say has hints of vanilla, butterscotch and caramel, is a crystal-clear golden colour, and is claimed to be a very versatile drink which appears popular with a wide age range of drinkers. It can be used in a range of cocktails, and in desserts such as tiramisu, cheesecakes and trifles.
