The owners of an Isle of Wight hotel have said that a fire that caused a partial collapse of the building on Saturday night may have been caused by fireworks. Investigators from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are trying to discover whether the fireworks – set off from the roof of the 18-bedroom Ryde Castle hotel in Ryde – were responsible for the blaze.

Planning permission has been submitted for a 350-bedroom Marriott hotel as part of a wider scheme to create a vibrant, waterside city neighbourhood on a near-derelict site in Stratford, east London. Askham Hall, a Grade I-listed building dating back to the 14th century in Cumbria, is to be converted at a cost of £2.5m into a 26-bedroom country house hotel. Used as a private residence by the Lowther family since the 1830s, the property near Penrith is being project managed by Charles Lowther.

Construction is set to start on a new 140-bedroom Ibis hotel in Queen's Road, Brighton. Contractor and developer McAleer & Rushe will start work on the new nine-storey building this week. The hotel will replace the former Grosvenor Casino on Queen's Road, just outside Brighton railway station.
