Askham Hall, a Grade I-listed building dating back to the 14th century in Cumbria, is to be converted at a cost of £2.5m into a 26-bedroom country house hotel. Used as a private residence by the Lowther family since the 1830s, the property near Penrith is being project managed by Charles Lowther.

Tourism Minister John Penrose has dismissed the suggestion that London hotels are overpricing themselves during the Olympics. He made his views known on the day that online booking company Hotels.com announced that the average price for a hotel room in London during the Olympic period was £213 a night

Construction is set to start on a new 140-bedroom Ibis hotel in Queen's Road, Brighton. Contractor and developer McAleer & Rushe will start work on the new nine-storey building this week. The hotel will replace the former Grosvenor Casino on Queen's Road, just outside Brighton railway station.

David Taylor, currently general manager of the Hoxton hotel, has been appointed general manager of Edition, the new brand being developed by Marriott International together with hotel design icon Ian Schrager. The hotel is being developed within the former Berners hotel in London.

The Catey statue won by the Soho hotel, London, in 2006, has been returned to the property after a Friday-night reveller stole it from its pride of place in the hotel's reception. The statuette was captured on closed circuit television being plucked off the hotel's concierge desk by a middle aged man.

The former owners of the Dial House hotel in the Cotswolds are set to open a new coffee shop in Bath later this month as the first of a planned chain. Adrian and Jane Campbell-Howard will open the first Society Café on Kingsmead Square on 26 March.

Amazing Retreats - the expanding portfolio of hotels and exclusive-use properties - has been rebranded under the name Clarenco. The Clarenco logo, accompanied by a strapline of "amazing retreats in spectacular locations", will be applied across the seven Amazing Retreats properties.

The 430-strong Leading Hotels of the World (LHW) consortium is on the verge of introducing a new revenue stream. Currently, 55% of LHW's income comes from membership fees, adjusted according to the number of hotel bedrooms, with the remaining 45% accounted for by the 10% fee charged on all transactions generated by the organisation.
