Sian Rees and Ian Wood, who met while working together at Terence Conran's Orrery restaurant, are to open a 100-cover restaurant on Llanelli Waterside. Michelin-starred chef Tom Aikens will be reopening his alfresco bar next month at Somerset House. Tom’s Terrace will be open from Monday 9 May and offer cocktails, sharing boards, British desserts and a party menu for 15 – 50 people.

Liverpool is set to get its first five-star hotel, after plans to convert the former Barclays bank site on Water Street were approved by the city’s council last night. Details of the development remain limited but the approved plans involve turning the Grade II listed building into a 138 bedroom hotel with “associated facilities”.
