Costa is once again the driving force behind growth at Whitbread, which has today reported an increase in total sales of 11%. The coffee chain delivered a particularly strong performance, with total system sales up by 24.6% to £786m for the 50 weeks to 16 February 2012.

A £30m luxury Yorkshire hotel that opened just five months ago has secured a loan of up to £10m for further development. Raithwaite Hall Country Retreat will use the money from Grosvenor Financial Consultants to add more luxury accommodation and extend land for future expansion.

The Hawksmoor and the Cavendish London are the only two hospitality operators to appear on this year's Sunday Times' 100 Best Small Companies to Work for List. Steak specialists Hawksmoor, which has three restaurants in London, was placed 36 on the list, while the four-star, 230-bedroom Cavendish hotel was at number 43.

Details have been released of the menu at the restaurant being overseen by Marcus Wareing at the new £24m Hotel La Tour in Birmingham. Set to open on 30 March, the 90-seat Aalto brasserie-style restaurant within the four-star, 174-bedroom hotel will feature classic English dishes with a modern twist.

The former owners of Lewtrenchard Manor are believed to be on the verge of regaining ownership of the hotel which they sold to Von Essen in 2003. Sue and James Murray are understood to have paid less than the asking price of £750,000 for the leasehold of the 14-bedroom hotel which they previously ran for 15 years.

The value of European hotels sales increased by 9% last year, but is still a long way behind the high of 2006, according to the annual European Hotel Transactions report from consultants HVS London.
Total European hotel transaction volume rose to £6b in 2011, up from £5.5b the previous year.

UK hotel rates are outperforming the rest of Europe as demand for the UK as a travel destination grows. Newly-released data from Pegasus showed that net average daily rates (ADR) increased by 2% in January 2012 on the previous year. European ADR climbed just 0.9% over the same period.
