Charles Smith, junior sous chef at Marcus Wareing at the Berkeley, has won the Craft Guild of Chefs' Young National Chef of the Year 2011. Steve Munkley, a vice-president of the Craft Guild of Chefs, said: "Charles showed a great understanding for the ingredients he worked with on the day."

Commis chef Ben Murphy of Koffmann's is on the top of the world after being awarded a gold medal for cooking at WorldSkills London 2011. Murphy, 20, was one of three hospitality contestants competing in the event, which came to a close last night with a presentation ceremony at the O2.

Nicolas Bouhelier, junior pastry sous chef at Raymond Blanc's Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons, has won the inaugural UK Pastry Open contest. The competition, which took place last Saturday (1 October), was held in preparation for the next Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie, the biennial pastry world cup held in Lyon in 2013.
