Pub operator JD Wetherspoon has cut the price of its coffee to 49p between 7am and 9am, in a bid to take more trade from highstreet coffee chains. The offer, which runs for seven days a week also includes tea and herbal tea at the same price.
Wetherspoon chief executive John Hutson said: "We believe that this is the best value cup of coffee and tea available on the high street.

Costa Coffee has claimed victory in its battle with Starbucks over an aggressive advertising campaign in which it claimed that "7 out of 10" coffee lovers preferred its coffee. The Advertising Standards Agency has not upheld any of Starbucks' complaints concerning the poster campaign.

Chocolate maker Cadbury is planning to open a national chain of branded cafés. The company has secured the backing of new owner Kraft for a series of branded outlets serving afternoon tea and a range of Cadbury-themed goods as well as an on-site chocolatier service.

Whitbread's Costa Coffee brand has remained the UK's biggest coffee chain for a second year running, despite no overall change in the number of stores.
Costa operated 750 outlets in 2009, putting it well ahead of its nearest rival, Starbucks, which grew by 65 stores to total 715.

The top twenty baristas (espresso coffee makers) in Britain have been found, and will all be heading for the UK barista championship in London this coming weekend. The champion British barista will go forward to the world finals in June, which for the first time are also being held in the UK.
