The UK has 25,498 hotel bedrooms in the total active pipeline – more than any other country in Europe, according to the March 2010 STR Global Construction Pipeline Report. The country also ended the month with the largest number of rooms – 12,519 – in construction.

Best Western remained the UK's largest hotel marketing consortium in 2009, counting more than 285 member hotels with a combined 15,305-plus bedrooms. The 140-strong Independents Hotel Association retained its grip on the second place thanks to a total tally of 9,000 bedrooms...

Punch Taverns retained its lead over Enterprise Inns as the UK's largest pub group in 2009. However, Punch only opened a net 28 new pubs to end the year with 8,428 venues, while Enterprise Inns added a net 75 pubs to bump up its estate to 7,775.
Marston's (formerly Wolverhampton & Dudley) moved up one place into the fourth position despiteshedding a net 22 outlets.

London hotels have enjoyed double-digit growth in revenue per available room (revpar) during the first quarter of 2010, according to business advisory firm Deloitte. Revpar growth of 10.1% to £94 was driven by occupancy which rose by 5.4% to 76.2%, while average room rates increased 4.5% to £123.

Revpar at London hotels increased to £110.76, up from £97.54 in the equivalent week of 2009.

Managed pub group Mitchells & Butlers retained its status as the UK's largest restaurant operator in 2009.
The group added 47 new venues to its portfolio to bring its total estate to 775, 190 more than its nearest rival Gondala which owns the PizzaExpress, Ask and Zizzi chains.

Whitbread's Costa Coffee brand has remained the UK's biggest coffee chain for a second year running, despite no overall change in the number of stores.
Costa operated 750 outlets in 2009, putting it well ahead of its nearest rival, Starbucks, which grew by 65 stores to total 715.

Yum! retained its status as the largest operator of quick-service restaurants in the UK during 2009 with 1,400 KFC and Pizza Hut outlets. There was no change in the top six positions compared with 2008. Lyndale Foods, Greggs the bakers, Cooplands and Peter's all fell off the table....

Nine of the 10 European countries surveyed in the monthly HotStats survey improved profitability in February 2010, according to Tri Hospitality Consulting.
Warsaw alone missed out on the improvement with a 15.5% decline in gross total operating profit per available room (goppar) to €27.55.

Hotel values in Europe fell by 13.4% last year, taking the cumulative decline over the past two years to almost 25%, according to HVS, the hotel valuation consultants. Hotel profitability dropped by 11.4% across the country in 2009, according to TRI Hospitality Consulting. The decline was steepest in the provinces, where gross operating profit per available room (GOPpar) declined by 15.5% to £28.51, down from £33.73 in 2008.
