The taxman has turned up the pressure on restaurants to pay all the taxes they owe after it announced last week that it was setting up a taskforce to tackle tax dodging in the sector. The taskforce is expected to pay a visit to eateries across London, the North-west and Scotland.

Ireland has slashed its VAT rate for the tourism industry to 9% as it tries to stimulate its economy. Hotels and restaurants in the country should both benefit from the new rate, which will fall from 13.5%. The reduction will also apply to cinemas, theatres, sporting facilities and even hairdressers.

The taxman has set up a new task force to tackle tax dodgers - and its first task will be to focus on restaurants in London, Scotland and the North-west. Announcing the task force's creation today, HMRC said the restaurants would come under scrutiny in the coming weeks.

The British Institute of Innkeepers (BII) has introduced a new "budget calculator" to help calculate the effects of the rises in duty in yesterday's Budget. The calculator uses Microsoft Excel and was developed by BII "business doctor" Trevor Brown. It will be made available to all licensees, not just BII members.

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) has called on the Government to freeze beer duty and scrap the alcohol duty escalator as part of its Budget submission to the Treasury. Scrapping the duty escalator in March would save more than 10,000 jobs, mostly in Britain's pubs.

Oxfordshire-based pub company Brakspear has cancelled its January beer price rise for the third year in a row, in a bid to offset the effects of a 2.5% rise in the rate of VAT. VAT rose to 20% today, the second rise in the tax in 12 months. Brakspear said that freezing the price of its beer in all of its 145 pubs would help tenants.
