The number of UK hospitality and catering outlets dropped marginally in 2008 to 262,134 establishments, down from 263,053 the previous year.
The steepest fall was seen in the pub sector, where outlet numbers dropped by 2.9%, while hotels suffered a marginal decline.

The number of hotel companies going bust during 2009 soared by 61% compared to the previous year, according to accountancy firm Wilkins Kennedy.
Hotels which went into liquidation, receivership, administration and company voluntary arrangements rose to 122, up from 76 in 2008.

The London hotels market is bouncing back from the depths of recession, but a recovery in the provincial sector is still too early to call. That's the picture provided by TRI Hospitality Consulting's latest review of the UK chain hotels market for March 2010.
Overall gross operating profit per available room (Goppar) in the UK jumped 8.3% for the month, although this masked a much higher climb of 17.6% in London, compared to a fall of 2.5% in the provinces.

More than three-quarters of pub-goers admit to drinking cheap supermarket alcohol before they go out - a practice known as "pre-loading". Meanwhile, almost half of consumers are drinking in pubs less often.

Whitbread retained its status as the UK's biggest hotel operators in 2009, operating the most hotels and the most bedrooms. Its Premier Inn budget chain grew by more than 59 properties to 577-plus hotels by the end of August, while the bedroom tally soared by more than 4,000 to in excess of 40,000 bedrooms.

Peel Hotels has warned that a recovery in the provincial economy is a long way off, as it slipped into a pre-tax loss for 2009/10. The firm managed to boost its revenue fort the year to 7 February 2010 to £14.1m, up from £12.7m, thanks to its acquisition of the Norfolk Royale hotel in May last year for £8.25m.

Lee Manning, reorganisation services partner at Deloitte, told Caterer that the drop was unexpected, and indicated that the UK economy could finally be turning a corner. "I think it is very encouraging. The numbers are lower even than they were in the comparison 2006/07 period," he said.

Punch Taverns retained its lead over Enterprise Inns as the UK's largest pub group in 2009. However, Punch only opened a net 28 new pubs to end the year with 8,428 venues, while Enterprise Inns added a net 75 pubs to bump up its estate to 7,775.
Marston's (formerly Wolverhampton & Dudley) moved up one place into the fourth position despiteshedding a net 22 outlets.

London hotels have enjoyed double-digit growth in revenue per available room (revpar) during the first quarter of 2010, according to business advisory firm Deloitte. Revpar growth of 10.1% to £94 was driven by occupancy which rose by 5.4% to 76.2%, while average room rates increased 4.5% to £123.
