Pub beer sales fall but rate of decline slows

Pub beer sales fell yet again in 2011, down 3.4% for the year, although off-trade sales were also down. The British Beer and Pub Association's (BBPA) Beer Barometer showed that the falls had helped contribute to 9,000 job losses in the beer and pub sector in 2011.

Live Music Bill passed through House of Commons

Brigid SimmondsA bill aimed at reducing the red tape around staging live music has been passed through the House of Commons today. The bill will exempt venues, including pubs, with a capacity of 200 or fewer from the need to obtain a licence for live music before 11pm.

Food and Fuel buys Prince of Wales in Putney

Greene King Coronation AleGreene King has unearthed a 75-year-old beer brewed to celebrate the coronation of Edward VIII, who was never crowned. The Suffolk brewer's Coronation Ale was due to be sold around Britain to commemorate the anniversary of the king's first year on the throne in 1936.

Just Opened – Archer Street Bar, London

It offers the atmosphere of a members' club but is open to everyone and boasts bar staff who occasionally break into song as they work. Christie & Co report points to falling pub closures

christie_logoAverage pub property prices remained broadly stable in 2011 but more of the pubs sold stayed as pubs, according to property agent Christie & Co. In its Business Outlook 2012, Christie & Co indicated that the rate of closures was slowing. Some 64% of pubs sold remained as pubs during the year.

Driftwood's Alfie's Revenge wins Camra winter beer award

Alfie's RevengeCornish brewery Driftwood's beer "Alfie's Revenge" has today been crowned the Supreme Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2012 by a panel of judges at the National Winter Ales Festival in Manchester. The 6.5% ABV old ale is described in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide 2012 as a "strong and fruity, well-balanced premium ale".

Business property prices fall by more than 2% in 2011
