Managed pub group Mitchells & Butlers retained its status as the UK's largest restaurant operator in 2009.
The group added 47 new venues to its portfolio to bring its total estate to 775, 190 more than its nearest rival Gondala which owns the PizzaExpress, Ask and Zizzi chains.

Whitbread's Costa Coffee brand has remained the UK's biggest coffee chain for a second year running, despite no overall change in the number of stores.
Costa operated 750 outlets in 2009, putting it well ahead of its nearest rival, Starbucks, which grew by 65 stores to total 715.

Yum! retained its status as the largest operator of quick-service restaurants in the UK during 2009 with 1,400 KFC and Pizza Hut outlets. There was no change in the top six positions compared with 2008. Lyndale Foods, Greggs the bakers, Cooplands and Peter's all fell off the table....
