Legislation forcing New York restaurants to put calorie information on their menus is leading to diners making healthier choices, Government research has revealed. In July 2008, New York became the first US city to require chain restaurants to post calorie counts in large type on menu boards.

The Local Authority Caterers Association (LACA) has been accepted by the Government as a Change4Life partner, with immediate effect. The Change4Life initiative is sponsored by the Department of Health and revolves around encouraging the general public to adopt healthier lifestyles by eating better and exercising more.

Children who visit fast-food chains are regularly consuming almost half their recommended daily calories in a single meal, according to new research by Which? magazine. On their last visit to a fast food restaurant the survey found that children had consumed 45% of their recommended daily allowance: 947 calories on average in Burger King; 912 at KFC; and 868 at McDonald’s.

The School Food Trust has awarded the Folkestone Academy in Kent £5,000 in its School of the Month competition in recognition of its promotion of healthy eating. The Academy won the award for their efforts to encourage more pupils to eat a nutritious lunch everyday.

One cannot reject the possibility that the report recently published by the Food Standards Agency was politically motivated. The chemical industry must have lobbied the Government so that sales of pesticides, presently in a very parlous state, could resume at 1970s levels by assuming that consumers are simple-minded, gullible, pushovers and can be fed any kind of misinformation on food safety.
