The Academy of Culinary Arts has named the candidates for this year's Annual Awards of Excellence final. Forty-six young chefs, pastry chefs and waiters (aged between 20 and 26) have been selected for the competition, which will take place in London and Scotland in June.

Whitbread's expansion strategy is proving effective, with total revenue at the group up 11.2% to £1,778m, for the 12 months to March. French hotel group Accor has begun the roll-out of the new branding for its Ibis hotels in the UK with the Ibis London Wembley Hotel. The move follows the decision taken by Accor to bring two of its economy brands into the Ibis stable.

Jumeirah Restaurants, the branded restaurant division of Dubai-based hospitality company the Jumeirah Group, is to launch its Noodle House dining concept in the UK this year.The company plans to roll out 27 outlets across the UK, with the first set to open later this year.

Indian group Bharat Hotels has acquired a former grammar school close to London's South Bank to convert into a 70-bedroom property. Once the home of St Olave's Grammar School until it moved to Orpington in 1968, the building in Tooley Street, Southwark, more recently housed Lambeth College.

The Craft Guild of Chefs has whittled down a record number of entries to reveal the nominees for 2012 Awards into 16 categories. The finalists will now have to wait until the special awards ceremony on 13 June at Wembley Stadium to find out which of them will be crowned the winners.

A 56-bedroom Holiday Inn Express has opened today on Merseyside as part of a £5.5m redevelopment scheme by Sanguine Hospitality. The Holiday Inn Express Liverpool-Hoylake opened in Hoylake, Wirral, on the site of the former Kings Gap Court hotel.

Travelodge is looking for a further 40 apprentices to join its Junior Management Programme (JuMP) this spring. JuMP provides A level students with a fast-track route into management. School-leavers receive a total salary of £25,000 to £30,000 while undergoing the three-year on-the-job training.

The De Vere Group is selling two hotels to Britannia Hotels for around £20m. It has exchanged contracts on the five-star, 140-bedroom Royal Bath in Bournemouth and the 192-bedroom De Vere Daresbury Park in Warrington.

There is overwhelming support for a reduction in VAT from 20% to 5% on hotel accommodation, attractions and meals away from home among hospitality professionals. That's the key finding of a survey by the British Hospitality Association (BHA) of more than 200 of its members.

René Redzepi, from the world-famous Noma restaurant in Copenhagen, is to run a two-week pop-up at London's Claridge's hotel this summer. The two-Michelin-starred chef, whose restaurant has twice been named the best in the world, will run A Taste of Noma at Claridge's from 28 July to 6 August.

Q Hotels intends to sell four hotels for around £55m-£60m, ahead of plans to refinance the business: the 54-bedroom Aldwark Manor Golf & Spa hotel, near York; the 100-bedroom Bridgewood Manor hotel in Chatham, Kent; the 102-bedroom Stratford hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon; and the 146-bedroom Park Royal hotel, near Warrington, Cheshire.
