No sooner had the air cleared from the smoking ban than the dangers of alcohol reared its head. Overall levels of alcohol consumption by the general public have increased rapidly over the past 10 years as we all drink more wine, spirits and alco-pops (but we all drink less beer) and the term binge-drinking has entered the national vocabulary.

Fast-food businesses in Essex could be hit with a “fat tax” of £1,000 in a bid to reduce the growing obesity problem in the area. The controversial plans are being considered by Barking and Essex Council and would hit everything from takeaway kebab and fish n’chip shops to McDonald's.

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) is calling on the Government to abolish alcohol duty on all beer containing less than 2.8% alcohol to help lure people back into pubs. The “People Pint” campaign could save punters 60p per pint of lower strength beer and help them drink sensibly, CAMRA insists.
