Cornish brewery Driftwood's beer "Alfie's Revenge" has today been crowned the Supreme Champion Winter Beer of Britain 2012 by a panel of judges at the National Winter Ales Festival in Manchester. The 6.5% ABV old ale is described in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide 2012 as a "strong and fruity, well-balanced premium ale".

The Bulgari Hotel & Residences London in Knightsbridge, which is set to open in April, has announced that chef Robbie Pepin will be in charge of its flagship restaurant, Il Ristorante. Pepin joins from Alain Ducasse's Italian restaurant La Trattoria in Monaco.

Business property prices, including those in the hospitality sector, fell by an average of 2.48 per cent in 2011, according to property agent Christie & Co's Business Outlook 2012 publication. This followed a marginal increase during 2010 of 0.3%.

The Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers (ALMR) has urged MPs to back the final stages of a bill which will make it easier for pubs to host music gigs. The Live Music Bill is expected to reach the report stage, due to take place in the House of Commons on Friday 20 January, and the ALMR called on MPs to support it.

Pub company JD Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin has renewed his call for a reduction in VAT, as the company revealed that like-for-like sales for the 12 weeks to 15 January 2012 were up 3.6% on the same period a year ago. December saw strong like-for-like sales.

Italian chef-restaurateur Antonio Carluccio has been appointed chef ambassador of the Clink, the commercial restaurant at Her Majesty's Prison High Down in Sutton, Surrey. Carluccio has over the past year run training workshops for the prisoners and hosted several fundraising events.

The Dart Marina Hotel in Dartmouth, Devon, is set to relaunch its River Restaurant this spring. Overlooking the River Dart, the new 90-seat restaurant, which will be overseen by head chef Tom Woods, forms part of a £1m redesign of the property. The project also includes 14 newly redesigned guest rooms.

The UK has the best bed and breakfasts in the world, according to traveller review website TripAdvisor. British B&Bs took eight out of the top 10 places in the world, with six based in England and two in Scotland. Topping the list was the Twenty One in Brighton, which climbed from sixth place last year.

The Craft Guild of Chefs has teamed up with turkey producer Bernard Matthews Foodservice to launch a new recipe competition. The scheme is aimed at promoting turkey as a meat not just for Christmas, and chefs are invited to submit a recipe using turkey as well as seasonal ingredients.

Steak restaurant and cocktail haunt Hawksmoor Spitalfields will add a new 60-cover bar next month. Set to open in late February, the new bar will feature interiors by regular Hawksmoor collaborators, interior architects Macaulay Sinclair. It will have a regularly changing list of five exclusive drinks.

London-based pub company the Draft House has launched a competition for beer-lovers to design, brew, and name their own cask ale. The winner will see 50 firkins (3,600 pints) of their dream beer created, brewed and named by them.

Food has once again helped Greene King boost its managed division, where like-for-like sales rose 8.2% in the seven weeks to 15 January 2012, with food up 11.1%. Meanwhile, average earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation in its Pub Partners division were also up by 5.9%.

Britain's big pub and restaurant groups had a strong Christmas and New Year, with like-for-like sales up 9.9% on the same period in a snow-hit 2010-11. Total sales, including the effect of new openings, were ahead 13.7% on December 2010.

Jamie Oliver is planning to launch his high street restaurant chain Jamie's Italian in North America. The celebrity chef, who has already expanded the concept to the Middle East and Australia, has confirmed he intends to take the brand across the Atlantic, although no specific plans are yet in place.
