Whitbread is the Marriott franchisee in the UK, operating the Marriott, Courtyard and Renaissance brands.

In 2001, nearly 40% of the company's room openings were conversions from other hotels. Marriott brands accounted for nearly 20% of all new hotel rooms under construction and in permitting (with permission to build) in the US.
Strategy
"International expansion remains a key to Marriott's growth. Three-quarters of the worldwide lodging industry is outside the US. While our international presence has increased eleven-fold over the past decade, we still have less than a 1% market share outside the US."

The Marriott family opened a root-beer stand in Washington DC in 1927 called the Hot Shoppe. This expanded to include an airline catering business in 1937.
The company opened its first hotel in 1957 in Virginia. In 1967 Hot Shoppes, Inc changed its name to Marriott Corporation.
The first international hotel opened in Acapulco, Mexico, in 1969. The first European hotel opened in Amsterdam, Holland, in 1975.
In 1993 the company split into operating company Marriott International and property company Host Marriott Corporation.
In 2001 Marriott linked up with Jarvis Hotels in a 20-year agreement that will see Jarvis's UK hotels rebranded under the Ramada International Hotels and Resorts banner.
