The hospitality industry was out in force on Monday 27 February to celebrate the work of Hospitality Action and The Springboard Charity at The Big Event 2012. The gala dinner, which took place at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge on the Monday of Hotelympia, raised about £80,000.

Elior UK has been named best team at La Parade des Chefs at Hotelympia. Ten teams, including contract catering rivals Compass Group and Sodexo, as well as Claridge's and Jumeirah, took turns to compete at the five-day trade show. They were each tasked with preparing a three-course menu for 100 covers.

The Craft Guild of Chefs announced at Hotelympia that it is inviting the industry to explore Britain's "outdoor larder" with the launch of the Universal Cookery & Food Festival. By taking a closer look at seasonal produce and wild food, the event aims to enhance the culinary knowledge of chefs and caterers to farmers and growers.

A team of young chefs from Manchester College have been named the winners of the 2012 Brakes Student Chef Team Challenge, in a competition held this week at Hotelympia. The competing teams of three full-time catering and hospitality students from across the UK were challenged to devise a three-course meal for four covers at a cost of no more than £10 per cover.

Coeliac UK launched its third gluten-free chef of the year competition at Hotelympia, searching for chefs to prepare dishes using gluten-free substitutes. Professional cooks and catering college students are required to design a three-course gluten-free meal for two people.
