Pubs, bars, restaurants and hotels must pay agency workers their fair share of tips from customers, following the introduction of new legislation. The warning comes from Jim Lister, head of employment at Manchester law firm Pannone, after the Agency Worker Regulations came into force earlier this month.

Tax officials are much more likely to probe hospitality businesses to ensure they are paying the national minimum wage (NMW), after the number of investigations by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) shot up. Peter Davies (pictured), senior manager at accounting and advisory firm Vantis, warned leading industry figures that more investigations had taken place in the first four months of this year than in the whole of last year.

A US waitress has been fired from her job at a pizza restaurant for calling diners cheap on social networking site Facebook after they left her a low tip. Ashley Johnson, from North Carolina, says the customers, who stayed for three hours, kept her at work an hour after she was supposed to finish her shift at Brixx Pizza but only left her a tip of $5 (£3.45).

People from Swansea are the lousiest tippers, according to research that found just one in five admitted they regularly recognise good service with a tip. Leeds was found to be the most generous city, according to the survey of 1,925 people by discount website MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, with 65% saying they regularly tipped.

Restaurant group D&D London is to scrap its 12.5% service charge at all of its restaurants across the capital. The company will, with effect from 1 October, stop adding the charge to customers’ bills except for group and event bookings, allowing diners to leave as much tip as they see fit.
