The handing back of around 120,000 room nights by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) could be a mixed blessing for hotels. As part of the bid to host the 2012 games, LOCOG made agreements with hotels to provide more than 600,000 room nights.

Demand for hotel rooms in London and the majority of UK destinations grew last year, despite the challenging economy, according to data from STR Global. Meanwhile, revenue per available rooms (revpar) is forecast to increase slightly in both the capital and the regions this year.

European hotels saw an average increase in occupancy and average daily room rates (ADR) for 11 months of 2011, according to STG Global. August was the only month that saw a slight decline (-1%) in ADR. However, two UK cities - Cardiff and Birmingham - reported the largest ADR decreases for the year.

Three- and four-star hotels in Scotland and Wales had a tougher time than their English counterparts during November 2011, according to accountants and business advisers PKF. The firm's monthly survey found that year-on-year revenue fell by 7.3% in Scotland and was down 12.4% in Wales.

Profit per room declined in London and the provinces in November as hoteliers felt the economic chill. According to the HotStats survey of 550 hotels by TRI Hospitality Consulting average room rate grew in London for the 25th consecutive month (£139.20), but room occupancy declined by 1.9 percentage points. In the provinces room rate suffered a 1.3% year on year decline to £69.47.

Boutique hotel operator Firmdale Holdings achieved an average room rate of £300 last year - more than double the figure for other London hotels. The company's annual accounts, due to be filed later this month, will show that Firmdale's turnover increased by 28.5% in the year to 31 January 2011, to £69.4m.
