Tourism trade association UKinbound has criticised the Government for its "continued neglect" of inbound tourism at ABTA's annual Travel Matters conference. The organisation's chief executive, Mary Rance, said she was worried about the Government's continued efforts to extol the virtues of inbound tourism.

Gavin Williams, the chief executive of the West Cornwall Pasty Company, has written a letter to Chancellor George Osborne warning that proposals to close a loophole on VAT exemptions for hot take-away food - the so-called pasty tax - could damage the Cornish economy.

There is overwhelming support for a reduction in VAT from 20% to 5% on hotel accommodation, attractions and meals away from home among hospitality professionals. That's the key finding of a survey by the British Hospitality Association (BHA) of more than 200 of its members.

Former pubs minister John Healey has urged the chancellor to "back British beer". Healey has written to George Osborne, telling him: "Having been minister for HM Customs & Excise and responsible for excise duties for the five years I spent in the Treasury, I am concerned that we are now overlooking and undervaluing a great British asset."

A Cambridge restaurant and wine bar is to highlight the punitive level of duty levied on beer - by offering customers a tax-free pint in the afternoons. Customers of d'Arry's Cookhouse and Wineshop on Cambridge's King Street will be able to buy pints of beer at £1.30 off the normal price.

Take-away restaurants have expressed dismay at the Government's move, announced in yesterday's Budget, to close a loophole relating to the way in which VAT is charged on hot take-away food. Chancellor George Osborne alluded to the proposed changes in his address to the House of Commons.

Ten Brakspear pubs in Henley are to stage a tax-free beer day on 28 February to illustrate how high taxation on beer is, ahead of next month's Budget. The Oxfordshire-based pub company will also encourage the town's drinkers to sign a petition calling for a more pub-friendly tax regime.

Pub company JD Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin has renewed his call for a reduction in VAT, as the company revealed that like-for-like sales for the 12 weeks to 15 January 2012 were up 3.6% on the same period a year ago. December saw strong like-for-like sales.

Tax disputes between small and medium-sized business and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) could be soon be resolved more quickly and easily following the introduction of a pilot dispute resolution process for SMEs. The Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)will employ independent HMRC facilitators.

Tax consultancy RSM Tenon has started offering VAT health checks to hospitality businesses after the taxman launched a crackdown on tax evasion in the restaurant sector. Earlier this month, HMRC revealed it was investigating 530 restaurants for tax evasion in London, the North-west and Scotland.
