Hi - I'm James Garner, managing editor. This is a posh title and doesn't really explain what I do, which is editor of CatererSearch.com. My role is to oversee site content and our blogs....but more about me later.
Firstly, a brief explanation of the caterer group blog and what it aims to give readers and users. We hope you'll gain a useful insight into the editorial team at Caterer and what interests us about the hospitality industry. Hopefully, you will enjoy this behind the scenes look at what goes on in our newsroom or on our features' desk, or maybe you'll like finding out what our editor Mark Lewis is thinking about....Mostly we hope you will enjoy our take on the industry we all love and work in...
And about me. Well if you're interested read on....
I've been a journalist for nearly 10 years. I cut my teeth on one of Caterer's sister publication's Farmers Weekly... the reason being that I'm a farmer's son and it took a while for me to shake the mud off my wellies and accept I was a farmer no longer.
While working for Caterer is quite different from farming, I have been able to sample the finest British produce (something I'm passionate about) served up in some of the our best restaurants... Like many at Caterer, I love fine food and wine and enjoy cooking, although my skill level is more at the Jamie Oliver cook book standard than Gordon Ramsay. I also love animals and wish I didn't live in London, so I could have a dog (BTW... I'm very sad to hear that Rick Stein's dog Chalky has died!)
But my real passion is sport - I love all sport, but particularly cricket, rugby and golf. My claim to fame is that I played cricket for Norfolk at Lords against minor county rivals Devon in 2001 and we thrashed them! Apologies to all Devonians for the gloating!

Catering service owners need to be aware of a new TV show called "Wedding Day" currently in production by Mark Burnett and Dreamworks TV for TNT. SHARE NOTHING WITH THIS GROUP REGARDING WEDDINGS YOU HAVE BOOKED. A bride originally contracted with us to do the wedding months ago won a "contest" to find a couple wanting to get married but hindered by circumstances.
(not really the case with this couple as they had already contracted with us long ago to do their wedding). We were contacted by the TV production company a couple of weeks ago and ask for lots of information regarding our operation, which we provided, and were told by the woman representing them that they looked forward to working with us, but we had to keep the details an absolute secret ( We were told that even the bride didn’t know that she had won ). 11 days prior to the wedding day we have been informed that our services are not required.
At this late date we, of course, cannot rebook a reserve event during the busy April wedding season, as facilities are committed, and as all of you know, weddings don't happen with 11 days notice... Las Vegas not withstanding!
If you are contacted by these people they are not to be trusted in our opinion. They paint a lovely picture of the PR your company will receive. They ask you to share the names and numbers of your local resources and they ask you and your vendors to bear the expense of fulfilling this fantasy wedding...and then drop you like a hot potato. Your employees lose the several days work the event provides, and of course your company is out the booking. Not sure they'll make the rounds to your area, but they are not welcome in our Georgia Kitchen.
