There's a lot of talk these days about how important it is to improve the quality of services offered in the UK, so we can compete with emerging destinations in the increasingly bitter fight for marketshare.
A lot of this will depend on the use of technology, but it seems we still have a few issues to iron out.
This could not have been better illustrated on my travels last week when I took work to do on a press trip, feeling confident that, staying in a four star hotel, there would be internet access at the property.
Having travelled extensively throughout the world with the same laptop, from the US, to Dubai and parts of Europe - and never having encountered any problems logging on, it was an unwelcome surprise discover that Nottingham was to prove to be the exception.
After trying the wireless option with no success, I tried dial-up, then had to call reception and the resident computer expert, all to no avail. While the hotel itself was lovely and the staff were all charming and hugely apologetic that my system was not compatible with theirs, this is surely a classic illustration of things that the industry needs to get right in order to win the quality improvement battle.

Most of the Nottingham hotels I've stayed in have perfectly fine Internet access - both with a fast and simple connection. You've not stated the hotel in question - which is very poor for any kind of review and therefore cannot be taken seriously.

Thanks for your comments Rich. The piece was never intended as a review - hence not naming the hotel in question - more of a look at the issue of service across the industry.
(To be fair, anyone who takes me seriously needs their heads tested!)
