So the people at the Beeb have announced the chefs who will represent Britain in France this week as part of the BBC2 programme the Great British Menu. Hats off to Mark Hix who secured two of the four courses - the main and the dessert - and to Richard Corrigan who will be serving the fish starter. But the chef who I'm happiest for has got to be Sat Bains.
I first met Sat eight years ago when he was competing in the Roux Scholarship. Despite being out of work at the time, he went on to win the 1999 Roux Scholarship title, spending his three month stage at Le Jardin des Sens in Montpellier with the Pourcel twins.
When I visited Sat during that period, accompanied by scholarship founder Michel Roux, I was struck by Sat's passion for produce. He spoke about veg prep poetically so I knew from that moment on that he would be an excellent cook.
Just before leaving for Montpellier he was appointed as head chef of Hotel des Clos in Nottingham and some years later he took on the ownership of the property with his wife, Amanda, and re-established the property as Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms.
It's great to see the place get such high profile with the BBC series - we wish them well in France.
Also, congratulations to Sat and Amanda for scooping the BMW Square Meal Best UK Restaurant Award 2007, which was announced this week.
