Restaurants at opposing ends of the culinary spectrum - a Michelin-starred eaterie and a college offering - both came in for fulsome praise in this weekend's national newspapers.
Simon Rogan's fine dining restaurant L'Enclume in Cartmel, Cumbria, scored five out five in the Daily Telegraph, with critic Jasper Gerard arguing it could possibly be the best restaurant in the world.
Comparing Rogan to Heston Blumenthal, he said L'Enclume was the Fat Duck of the North: "Blumenthal deserves his three Michelin stars, but it's absurd that Rogan has only one."
At a very different level, the Vincent Room Brasserie at London's Westminster Kingsway College offers first class cooking and friendly service at reasonable prices, according to The Guardian.
"We left utterly charmed by a venture that combines the indulgence of youth with professional rigour far, far better than this review," Matthew Norman enthused.
Elsewhere other establishments - and one chef in particular - did not fare so well in their reviews.
Celebrity chef John Burton-Race, who has had a tough time recently after being caught drink-driving, was criticised on two fronts.
First his Michelin-starred New Angel in Dartmouth, Devon, came under fire from Giles Coren of The Times who found a shabbily appointed room, odd service and disgusting loos. However, Coren did agree that the food and cooking are of the finest quality.
Food, unfortunately, is the major let-down at Harvey's in Ramsgate, Kent, according to The Observer. Operated by Kent Inns, which employs Burton-Race as "development chef", the food is so poor that food critic Jay Rayner questioned whether the company, like its customers, is getting its money's worth.
The Sunday Times meanwhile gives the Michelin-starred Chez Bruce the thumbs down, with AA Gill calling the food "uninspiring".

Don't really agree that Coren found cooking “of the finest quality" at Carved Angel. What he said was that "the food is good enough to make the place 'vaut le détour' from Dittisham. Maybe even from Totnes or Salcombe. But from Plymouth, Exeter or Sidmouth? Probably not." He rated the cooking 7/10.
