Fields of gold

If you have driven through Somerset this month you may have spotted the early golden rapeseed views courtesy of award-winning rapeseed oil producer Fussels Fine Food, drilled a little earlier than usual this year.

Somerset farmer Andy Fussell founder of Fussels Fine Foods says: "We planted early this year as we had a lot of rain and it's important for us to plant in a moist seed bed as it helps ensure the quality of the rapeseed oil we produce. A slightly earlier harvest in mid to late July won't be a problem as all our seed is stored carefully and we only cold press what we need in small batches so the oil doesn't sit around unnecessarily".

Fussels Fine Foods will celebrate five years this September and in that time the Company has harvested 350 tonnes of rape and produced more than 110,000 litres of rapeseed oil.  Fussell has a great passion for every aspect of his business and is involved with each stage of producing his Sunflower Oil and Rapeseed Oil - from growing and nurturing the crops, to harvesting, drying and storing the seeds.

Everything is grown and pressed on his family's farm in Rode, Somerset, which is part of Natural England's Environmental Stewardship Scheme.  This ensures the products are always of a premium quality and has traceability from crop to drop.

Rapeseed Fields - Fussels.jpgFussels Fine Foods rapeseed oil also received a two star Gold award at the Great Taste Awards 2011 and most recently was voted as the Best Local Oil in the Good Food Awards 2012 for Local Producers.

Have you heard the whispers on the street? Bacon Jam, Bacon Jam.

"Have you tried Bacon Jam?" I was asked at the New Covent Garden Christmas event last week.

Here's the low-down - it was created at restaurant Eat 17 by head chef Chris O'Connor and Co-owner James Brundle when they successfully combined the two ingredients served with their cheeseburger (rasher of bacon and onion marmalade).

The product has had local and national news coverage and the first five minutes of Jonathan Ross' debut ITV show were devoted to it!

Thumbnail image for bacon jam 1.jpgThe team are already stocking Selfridges food hall and many other fine food outlets and have recently secured a deal to supply retail jars at the Cotsworld Fayre.

Now the Bacon Jam guys are now ready to supply catering tubs to restaurants. Turners Fine Foods are signed up to distribute it.

There's a jar on its way to me - so the proof will be in the - erm Bacon Jam.

If reports are to be believed - it will change the humble burger forever.
