Last night was one of the most anticipated episodes of Great British Menu and I imagine viewers expecting drama weren't disappointed.

That's right - it was the North West's turn to do the fish course and once again we got to see the kitchen sparring of regional judge Marcus Wareing and returning contestant Johnnie Mountain.

Fans of the show will know that these two have a history. Their GBM relationship has never exactly sailed on an even keel, but nor has it ever been quite so tense. You've seen the episode, I'm sure, but in summary...

Ooh, you lucky little couch potato foodies, you! The BBC once again shows that the appetite for cooking-based programming has in no way diminished.

Aunty has just announced a fresh glut of food shows will be hitting the not-so small screen - major food fans enjoy the glory of a glistening gravy in eye-wateringly sharp 78 inch HD, you know - with none other than the original Domestic Goddess leading the charge.

Daniel-Clifford.jpgYou know those days you have where time seems to flitter off without your say so and before you know it more than a week has gone by?Well that's what happened to me. So sorry.

As you're no doubt already aware, Daniel Clifford won his regional heat on Friday in his third time of entering the top chef  comp on telly.

After four days of trying desperately to impress regional judge Glynn Purnell, returning champion Aktar Islam was sent packing and it was up to Paul Foster to stand in the way of Clifford's chance glory.

Great British Menu 2012: Alan Murchison edges into the lead

Scotland-scores-day-two.jpgAfter day two of the Scotland heat of Great British Menu, it's two-Michelin starred Alan Murchison that has edged into the lead in the four day race for the Friday final.

If the placings finish as they currently stand, it will be Colin Buchan that joins him in a bid to impress judges Oliver Peyton, Prue Leith and Matthew Fort.

One suspects that Mark Greenaway will do everything he can to stop that happening.

It's all to play for tonight as we go into the main courses and I really start to salivate. Mental note: have dinner before watching Great British Menu and avoid incessant rumbly tummy syndrome.

Great British Menu 2012: from starters to the fish course [POLL]

Jeremy-Lee-GBM.jpgGreat British Menu's Scotland heat moves on to the fish course tonight.

Yesterday I asked which of the chef's starters sounded the most appetising and it turned up some interesting results, almost exactly opposite to the scores given by judge Jeremy Lee (pictured).

According to you, my lovely Satellite Dishes readers, Mark Greenaway's braised pork cheek served with hot apple jelly and sea buckthorn was the most appealing dish, favoured as it was by 54.55% of you.

And we're off! Well, almost. Tonight sees the start of the new series of Great British Menu. As we know, the theme for the 2012 run is, well... 2012.

So, the brief.

According to the Beeb, the chefs need to capture the Olympic spirit with contemporary British cooking that is "breathtaking" and "awe-inspiring".

With that in mind, the calibre of competing chef is pretty darn high, and rightly so.

Little Paris Kitchen: Rachel Khoo knew what to do

Rachel Khoo's Little Paris Kitchen is really quite watchable, in a way that the Ridiculous Miss Dahl (or whatever the programme was called) could never be.

Why? Because pretty little Racheycakes is trained and credibility goes a long way.

Yes, (also pretty) Sophie Dahl can knock together some attractive plates of food. But the concept of her show was so outrageously contrived - right down to the shabby chic London property that was hired to be her kitchen - it was unbearable viewing.

Masterchef 2012: Shelina Permalloo takes the title

Shelina-Masterchef-2012.jpgNice one Shelina, your passion for mango (not to mention your culinary skill) paid off!

That's right, the Hungry Mauritian took the title in last night's gripping final, becoming only the second female winner of the current format of the show after Thomasina Miers of Wahaca fame.

Credit is due to Andrew Kojima and Tom Rennolds. They put in a valiant effort.

Was it Andrew's decision to throw strawberries into the mix of his pork belly dish that lost it for him? Did Tom get carried away and add five ingredients too many to his menu?

Masterchef 2012: what lies in store for tonight's winner?

Masterchef 2012 logo.jpgTonight we bid farewell to yet another series of Masterchef as either Andrew, Shelina or Tom takes home the twisted metal trophy, safe in the knowledge that they are indeed the best amateur cook in the country.

This series. Based on the opinions of two blokes. And one them can be won over as long as you serve something made of chocolate or gooey and preferably that he can mis-pronounce.

Chocolate 'fondont' then.

Throw a load of citrus and chilli into the main course and you've bagged the pair of them.
