Masterchef 2012: welcome back to past winners and finalists

Masterchef 2012 logo.jpgYou know what? I quite like the pace of this year's Masterchef. That's right, you heard.

Gone are the endless rounds of invention tests followed by a lunch service in a professional kitchen followed by a dish of the contestant's choice back in the studio... blah blah blah.

Oh okay then, not quite gone. But I am grateful to the producers for the tweak to the format that saw all of that repetitive nonsense squished down into the opening three episodes.

Now we can get on with the more diverse challenges set before the gang of wannabe cooks.

And what a gang! One name sticks out and that one name is (you guessed it): Ake (possibly Aki, not sure).

A young lady with a frighteningly animated face, a PhD in quantum physics and an inability to serve up equal portion sizes (I'd ask for your course fees back if I were you).

She became instantly memorable when she quipped that judge John Torode should see the state of her room after he commented on the ghastly state of her work bench. Raised eyebrows? Just a few.

Tonight's episode will see the final 12 charged with cooking for some of Masterchef's past winners and finalists. It will also see the contestants pitted against each other for the first time as each has to prepare one course, creating a menu of four starters, four mains and four desserts from which their guests can choose.

And all this with JT donning his whites and barking orders at them from the pass. This should be good for a giggle.

Fellow judge Gregg Wallace will probably swan around the dining room pulling faces and spouting cliches and let's be honest, we expect nothing else.

In fact, a friend of Satellite Dishes suggested a drinking game on this very subject (not something I condone, you understand - drink responsibly kids).

The idea is that you take a drink every time Pudding Face uses either the word "sweetness" or "sharpness" in his description of the food. If he manages to use both words in one sentence, then that's two drinks (sips, shots - your choice, I believe) you must down.

This could get messy, so if you should attempt to play along with this game - and I'm definitely not suggesting that you do - be careful, for goodness sake!

* Masterchef airs Tuesday to Thursday at 9pm on BBC1
