Packed Hospitality audience hears Alex Polizzi question merit of scrapping hotel star rating

It was standing room only for an interview with Alex Polizzi at Hospitality 2011 at noon today. The Hotel Inspector star's appearance was so keenly attended that the audience spilled onto nearby stands to get a view.
Deligates heard how she was brought up in a hospitality dynasty but was disuaded from going into the hotel business by her family, describing it as "not the most lucrative activity".
Polizzi also shared her views on the propsed scrapping of the star rating system for hotels. She said she was very nervous about the rating system disappearing, adding that she didn't think solely using opinions on the internet was the way to go.
"I understand why the Government don't want to keep supporting a duplicate rating system [as the AA already offer one] but I think with all its faults it's something that should stay," she said. "What happens to all the establishments that have spent the £600 - will they be offered a transfer?"
She advised those affected to write to their local MP to register their concern. "The more people who write in to suggest a transfer the more powerful the argument will be," Polizzi said.
Speaking more broadly about her experience Polizzi said that quality service was the most important aspect of any hospitality business. "Quality service will shine through when a mistake is made," she explained. "That's what sorts the wheat from the chaf. A good manager can leave a great impression."
Polizzi also told the audience that guest responded to a informal environment. She said Hotel Endsleigh was more relaxed than a city centre hotel might be, with fewer staff and an honour bar.
"At my level of hotels a certain amount of generosity should br expected," she said. "Even if guests take a double rather than a single I'm happy to take that on the chin."
