Hello, all, this is my first post!

My husband and I went down to the pub last night, and when my husband went in to get the refills of our beer he told the bartender to just reuse our beer glasses. He was told that there is "new legislation", and all glasses must be washed after one use.  We were astounded! If this is true, it certainly isn't cost effective, and think of the energy wasted to wash hundreds of glasses. Not eco-friendly!!

Thanks for your help, :)

landlords, as with any other person concerned with food preparation, (which includes drinks these days) have a duty of care to reduce cross contamination. There is a risk of cross contamination via the nozzles of the beer pumps if reusing a glass. There is no specific law governing this however it is best practice not to reuse a glass.

sounds like someone is exagerating a little.

hope this helps

a few years ago when I started in the industry customers would bring their glasses back to the bar with the tiniest dribble at the bottom and the say "stick a half in there!"

I can't describe the chaos which eschewed when I got a half pint glass out and measured the refill for them.Tongue Tied

I checked this with @BHAtweets who are worth following if you have questions like this, and here was their answer:

@neil_g it's a requirement that all articles and equipment that come into contact with food which would include glassware must be clean

@neil_g is absolutely correct.  The legilation is in European Regulations brought in in 2006.  I would say that the bar tender has more likely been following a company policy who have decided to reduce any risk of cross contamination as mentioned previously.

The practice has always been illegal . Nothing to do wth EU . Quite obviously contravenes basic hygiene rules
