I've just had lunch at a branch of All Bar One where I ordered a Croque Monsieur priced at £4.95. Imagine my disappointment when I was served nothing more than a cheese and ham toastie garnished with a handful of crisps which I could have got from the local sandwich bar for half the price.

In my book a Croque Monsieur has lashings of bechamel poured over the top. I wouldn't have ordered it if it had been described on the menu as a cheese and ham toastie. Anyone had any similar experiences of food not matching the menu description?

As a cheese and ham toastie, that looks pretty good, but Croque Monsieur it aint. I believe this is the bechamel drenched snack your thinking of...

I once spent a night in jail in Singapore because of a green curry that quite simply wasn't a green curry at a rip-off Thai restaurant on Boat Quay. The saucer of greasy chicken gobbets in a tastless grey gravy that seemed to be one part oyster sauce to two parts water was so awful that I refused to pay. Queue angry chef appearing at my table brandishing a knife and screaming at me in Thai. The police arrived after a few minutes and I was whisked away to the station "for questioning". The questioning never took place - I was left in a cell until dawn and then released. At least I never paid for the curry. Ha!

So what did you do about the cheese and ham toastie badly impersonating a croque monsieur?

Well the conversation with the waitress went something like:

"Oh, I ordered a Croque Monsieur"

"That is a Croque Monsieur"

"No, it's a cheese and ham toastie"

"That is a Croque Monsieur"

"No, Croque Monsieur has bechamel poured over the top"

"Well I wouldn't know about that, I thought that was a Croque Monsieur"

I ate it rather than order something else and wait another 20 minutes and the manager actually took it off the bill which I wasn't expecting. However, I do feel compelled to drop All Bar One a line to protest at the misleading description.
